Das Boot
Thursday's Child is a Doug Hemphill designed Hotfoot 31 - A fin keel, fractional rigged racing/cruising boat. She is an absolute dream to sail. Her original owner had her built with the intention of offshore racing. Her initial race was to be the 1984 Vic-Maui race however a production delay meant that the boat wouldn't be ready in time. While she still has yet to make it as far as Maui she does have an impressive list of awards and trophies from all over B.C. and the Pacific North West. All too often I'm reminded of how well the boat used to do with the previous owner. Big shoes to fill I suppose.
Why The name 'Thursday's Child'?
This is her original name. I was incredibly relieved to hear that the original owner named the boat after the poem below and not the awful David Bowie song. (Don't get me wrong - I love Bowie but that has to be one of his worst songs ever!) As I understand it all of the significant steps of construction took place on a Thursday including the stepping of the mast and her launch.
Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the sabbath day Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.
Someone remind me to send Chris (the original owner) a thank you not for not calling it "Wednesday's Child"...
